How it started
During a routine check-up my doctor measured me and I found I’d lost 5cm. I couldn’t believe it.
I’ve had quite a bit of back pain over the years, but I don’t like to complain. And then I noticed I was getting shorter. I started to find it difficult to reach things on the top shelf in the kitchen – something I used to be able to do easily.
My doctor said it could be osteoporosis, but to confirm it he’d have to do a number of tests, including a back x-ray and a BMD (bone mineral density) test. The x-ray showed an old vertebral fracture which was probably the reason I experienced so much back pain, and the BMD (bone mineral density) test confirmed the diagnosis.
What I changed
I won’t deny it, the diagnosis was a shock. But it forced me to take a long look at my lifestyle and I realised that I had been neglecting my health.
After talking to my doctor, I began to make changes, starting with a treatment plan. My diet changed to include more fruit and vegetables, as well as calcium and vitamin D supplements, and I started to follow some helpful exercise I found on I’m even working with some light weights!
And when I’m home, I use a small step ladder to reach the top shelf. It’s got a sturdy handgrip, so I don’t worry about falling.

How it helped
I’m determined to stay active and independent. And making small changes now so I can stay healthy and fracture free is a small price to pay.
How I feel now
I won’t lie, I still have back pain, but it doesn’t feel as bad as it used to.
I’m determined to stay active and not to slide back into my bad habits.
However, I am afraid that it won’t be enough and I’ll end up losing my independence if I suffer another spine fracture.
